Construction Projects
North End Landscaping
Fairmount Park, in cooperation with PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the Schuylkill River Development Corporation landscaped the section of Schuylkill Banks between Race Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Enhancements included a small plaza at MLK Drive, a fishing area, and an overlook of Center City and the Schuylkill River. Learn more about this project

JFK Blvd. Bridge and Stairtower
This bridge has undergone structural improvements by PennDOT. SRDC partnered with PennDOT to provide aesthetic enhancements to improve pedestrian and bicyclist experiences, including a wide promenade and stairtower to Schuylkill Banks that opened in February 2010.
Market Street Bridge
Enhancements to the Market Street Bridge created a safer and more pleasant pedestrian crossing experience. This project was completed in December 2009.
Gray's Ferry (DuPont) Crescent
A 3300 foot path along the stretch of the tidal Schuylkill between 34th Street and Warton Street will become a landscaped greenway, giving the community a refuge on this previously detached section of the river. Remediation work has been completed. Trail construction is expected to begin spring 2010.
Boardwalk and South Street Ramp
A half-mile boardwalk on Schuylkill Banks from Locust Street to South Street will extend the popular multi-use trail, providing a link from the South Street Bridge Ramp and Stairs to the University of Pennsylvania and West Philadelphia. The boardwalk is in the design process, and construction is expected to be completed by 2012.
An ADA compliant pedestrian and bicycle access ramp will be built at the new South Street Bridge, providing a connection to the boardwalk and improving access with linkages to regional trail systems. This project will be built as part of the reconstruction of the bridge, and is expected to be completed by 2011.
CSX Crossing
A bridge connecting Schuylkill Banks to the Schuylkill River Park will be built over CSX tracks South of the Locust Street at grade crossing, creating an alternative path into Schuylkill Banks from Center City Philadelphia when the at grade crossing is unavailable. This project has an anticipated completion date of late 2010.
Bartram's Garden Connection
Plans for an extension of Schuylkill Banks Trail call for a river crossing near Gray’s Ferry Avenue and continuing along the West side of the river to Bartram’s Garden. This project is still in conceptual and feasibility studies and it will likely be a few years before the trail connects to Bartram’s Garden.
