North End and Bridge Enhancement Dedication Ceremony
As the ongoing development of the banks of the tidal Schuylkill River continues to transform the city’s waterfront into a viable riverfront destination, the 1.2 mile completed stretch of the long-range Schuylkill Banks project continues to evolve. The latest milestone is the completion of the North End project, including the Schuylkill Banks Plaza. Now when bikers, runners and nature lovers enter the north entrance to Schuylkill Banks along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, they won’t believe their eyes. By planting 28 new trees, courtesy of the Weeder’s Garden Club, developing a fishing pier, creating a natural lower riverfront trail and a welcoming gateway complete with dramatic pergola, visitors now have an appealing entrance to Schuylkill Banks directly from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
The new JFK Bridge enhancements, which were completed with significant support from PennDOT and the City of Philadelphia, include: new stairs directly to the Banks; wider sidewalks; pedestrian scale lighting; and a gleaming tower clock, among others. The Market Street Bridge includes a complete cleaning of the façade, new balusters and a gateway pergola announcing the entry to the trail.
SRDC and a number of local business leaders and city officials met on December 1 at the Schuylkill Banks Plaza to thank everyone who made these trail and bridge improvements possible.
Dedication participants included Jerry Sweeney, chairman of SRDC and CEO of Brandywine Realty Trust; Joseph Syrnick, president and CEO, SRDC; Jane Pepper, President of the PA Horticultural Society; PA Senator Larry Farnese; Lois Renthal, member of the Weeder’s Garden Club; and Mark Focht, executive director, Fairmount Park. Also in attendance were members of the design teams and contractors, as well as other city and state officials, including PennDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, the PA Horticultural Society, and the William Penn Foundation.
