Schuylkill Banks was one of five winners at the 2009 Philadelphia Sustainability Awards, held March 2 at the Philadelphia Flower Show. Finalists and winners at the awards were lauded for their work as "sustainability innovators" in their fields and in the region. They were also acknowledged as making strides towards Mayor Nutter's goal of making Philadelphia the "greenest" city in the nation. The City of Philadelphia, Fairmount Park and Schuylkill River Development Corporation were honored for creating and maintaining Schuylkill Banks, a 1.2 mile recreational trail and greenway along the tidal Schuylkill River. They were recognized for trasforming this formerly abandoned and overgrown stretch of riverfront into a landscaped amenity where 16,000 people a week enjoy the outdoors in the heart of the city and thousands more take advantage of free and low cost programming. Schuylkill Banks was named an innovative sustainable asset because it is an alternative transportation corridor, urban wildlife habitat, pollution management plan and community asset that unites diverse Philadelphians. Other people, businesses and organizations recognized by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and their partners at the 2009 Sustainablilty Awards were Bob Pierson for Farm to City, the Energy Coordinating Agency, Eagles Go Green and Onion Flats.
