Kayak Tour FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions:
What will I see on the tour?
Begin at Walnut Street and paddle upriver towards the historic
Fairmount Water Works
. View Philadelphia's 21st Century skyline from a unique river vantage point. A kayak tour of Schuylkill Banks offers a unique setting and experience unlike any other in Philadelphia.
Advanced kayak trips to
Historic Bartram's Garden
are also available. Get a unique perspective on the architecture and design of 12 bridges over the tidal Schuylkill River as you paddle downriver and travel back to a simpler time.
Is parking available?
All kayak trips depart from the dock located at Walnut Street.
Street parking is available near the Locust Street Entrance at 25th and Locust Street. Metered parking is available on Walnut, Chestnut, and Market Streets and on Schuylkill Avenue.
Many parking lots are available near the Walnut Street Dock. One option is the lot located at 24th and Sansom Streets. After parking, walk right onto 24th Street, climb the stairs, turn right on Walnut St., walk down the bridge towards the river, and go down the stairs to the Walnut Street Docking area. From this lot you can also access the dock by walking down 24th Street to Locust Street, turn right on Locust Street and walk to the end of the street at 25th and Locust, take the at-grade crossing across the railroad tracks, turn right on the trail and walk about one block to the Walnut Street Docking Area.

How early should I arrive for my tour?
We suggest that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the tour; however you will want to allow time for potential traffic and parking.
Can I join the tour if I have never kayaked before?
This is a great opportunity for first time kayakers. Before each tour begins, you will receive hands on training from certified instructors. The Schuylkill Banks Kayak Tour requires a moderate exertion level.
All advanced kayak tours (to Bartram's Garden) are recommended for those who have kayaked before.
Are there any age requirements?
All participants must be at least 8 yrs old. All participants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult and participate in a tandem experience. Parental consent required for 18 and under.
What should I bring?
It is suggested that you bring suntan lotion and a bottle of water. Do not bring any personal items. There will be a place to leave car keys and other small items, however, it is suggested that other personal items be left at home. Some individuals do decide to bring a camera in the kayak with them. Please place all cameras in a zip lock plastic bag, as they may get wet. The Schuylkill River Development Corporation holds no responsibility for personal items that suffer water damage or end up at the bottom of the Schuylkill River.
Do I need a reservation?
