Bulkheading
The City of Philadelphia Streets Department began revitalization of the tidal Schuylkill River corridor with the bulkheading of a large portion of the trail segment from Locust Street to Martin Luther King Boulevard. This project began in late 1996 and was completed March 1998.
Bulkheading included constructing new retaining walls along the formerly industrial shore line, backfilling behind the new retaining walls and grading the new riverfront space. This project was essential for protecting water quality in the Schuylkill by preventing further erosion and for creating a viable riverfront area for trail and park creation.
Bulkhead design was provided by Boles Smyth Associates.
Funding for this bulkheading project was provided by a $5 million federal grant with matching City funding.
