Schuylkill Banks designated East Coast Greenway Trail

Activity:

It's Official! East Coast Greenway Pennsylvania has announced that the Schuylkill River Trail running along the Schuylkill Banks in Philadelphia from Lloyd Hall south to Locust Street is the first designated stretch of the East Coast Greenway in Pennsylvania to be completed.

The future section of Schuylkill River Trail from Locust Street south to Grays Ferry Avenue has also been designated as a link in the East Coast Greenway, and is now under design.
The East Coast Greenway is the nation's first long-distance urban trail system; a city-to-city transportation corridor for cyclists, hikers, and other non-motorized users. By connecting existing and planned trails, a continuous, safe, green route 3,000 miles long is being formed linking Calais, Maine at the Canadian border with Key West, Florida. It incorporates waterfront esplanades, park paths, abandoned railroad corridors, canal towpaths, and highway corridors, and in many areas it temporarily follows streets and roads to link these completed trail sections together.

When completed, the ECG will enter Pennsylvania in Morrisville, passing through lower Bucks, Philadelphia, and Delaware Counties before crossing into Delaware near Marcus Hook. If funding comes through as anticipated, 43 miles of the ECG will be open in Pennsylvania by the end of 2010. In the meantime, PennDOT has designated the ECG Interim Route as Bike PA Route E, part of the network of nine state-maintained bike routes that cross Pennsylvania north to south and east to west. You can use the Bike Route E signs to navigate the Interim East Coast Greenway.
