Get to Know the Schuylkill River

to
Tidal Schuylkill River Kayaking

Join us in exploring the Schuylkill River, from life in a drop of river water to plants that help keep the river clean on June 21 from 10:30am to 2:30pm!

After brief introductions by Fairmount Water Works staff members, we will take water samples from the Schuylkill River and view the samples under microscopes to see the various zooplankton that live in the river. Next, we will go on a native plant scavenger hunt to learn how to identify different plant species that live along the riverbank. We will then go inside the Fairmount Water Works to see the mussel hatchery and learn about the history of the building as a water pumping station. After a brief lunch break (bring your own), we will hike down the Schuylkill River Trail (about one mile) to the Walnut Street Dock where kayaks await. Professional kayak tour guides from Hidden River Outfitters will give a brief orientation to paddling before we go out on the river in kayaks!

This program is geared towards families. Minimum age is 12 years old. All participants must sign a kayak waiver, and participants aged 12-18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will need to sign the minor’s kayak waiver.

Meet at Fairmount Water Works at 10:30am. Space is limited; 20-person maximum. Advance registration required. Fee: $10/person.
