Trail Closed

The Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) between Race Street and JFK Boulevard is closed until further notice for emergency repairs.

A large sinkhole has formed under the asphalt trail surface just north of the SEPTA Bridge. SRDC is working with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, the Philadelphia Water Department, and engineers to figure out what caused the large cavity to form and what is needed to make the necessary repairs. Please use the street network to navigate around this area during the trail closure.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during the progression of this important repair work.

SRT Trail Detour

Update: November 18, 2025
SRDC and the City continue to evaluate the cause of the sinkhole. Initial investigations have found gaps between the steel sheet pile and sewer headwall interface that could be causing the erosion; however, we are uncertain to the extent of the breach. The next step is to determine the appropriate long-term repair and hire a contractor to implement it. The cost and funding for this repair work has not been identified. We do not have a timeline for the repair and reopening of the trail at this time. Everyone involved in this repair work understands the importance of the trail to its users and is working to get it back open as soon as possible.
